One person dead and five wounded in shooting at Albany State University’s homecoming event in Georgia

A shooting at Albany State University in Georgia during the school’s homecoming Saturday night left one person dead and at least five others wounded. The deceased victim was identified as 19-year-old De-Marion Tayshawn Daniels. The wounded victims have not been publicly identified. No suspects were named or detained by Sunday afternoon. The incident occurred just before 9 p.m. on the school’s east campus, with the circumstances leading to the shooting remaining unclear.

Albany State University, a historically Black institution with approximately 6,000 undergraduate students, stated that the safety and security of its students, faculty, and staff are its top priority. This shooting occurred just hours after the school’s football team won its homecoming game.

Interim school president Lawrence Drake expressed the university’s commitment to providing resources for the well-being of the campus community, including counseling services. The incident at Albany State University comes on the heels of a similar shooting at Tennessee State University in Nashville the previous weekend, where one person was killed and nine others were wounded.

Albany State University is urging its students to utilize the available resources for mental, emotional, and physical support during this difficult time. Updates on the investigation will be provided as more information becomes available.
