Bob Manson, a retired teacher from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has visited over 600 bookstores across 49 states, Canada, and Mexico over the past decade. Inspired by a book called “My Bookstore,” he set out to visit every store mentioned in the book, which he eventually accomplished, much to the surprise of the author, Ronald Rice. Manson not only visits bookstores but also talks with owners, regulars, and the community to understand each store’s unique place. He documents his visits on his blog and social media, highlighting the diversity and individuality of each bookstore he visits. Manson has formed impressions of bookstores from coast to coast, noting differences in hospitality and openness among regions. He has made friends in nearly every bookstore he visited and appreciates the welcoming environment of each store. Moreover, Manson has used his platform to help promote the BINC Foundation, which supports bookstore owners and employees facing emergencies. Through his travels, Manson has gained a deep appreciation for the diversity and importance of independent bookstores and their impact on their communities.
