Ahead of next week’s elections, a large number of Georgians participate in a pro-EU march in Tbilisi

Tens of thousands of Georgians recently marched through the streets of Tbilisi in a rally to show their support for the country joining the European Union. The rally, just a week before the parliamentary elections on October 26th, is seen as crucial in determining whether Georgia will continue on its pro-European path or return to Russia’s orbit.

Opposition supporters have criticized the ruling Georgian Dream party for derailing the country’s chances of joining the EU, particularly with the passing of controversial legislation. One such law includes a ban on same-sex marriages, adoptions by same-sex couples, limits on LGBTQ+ representation in the media, and bans on gender-affirming care. Another law requires media organizations and NGOs that receive foreign funding to register as foreign agents or face fines.

President Salome Zourabichvili, who is pro-European, has refused to sign these bills into law and has expressed a commitment to joining Europe. The European Union has criticized Georgia for these laws, leading to the freezing of its EU accession process.

Despite these challenges, the Georgian Dream party remains popular, with polls indicating they may receive over 40% of the vote in the upcoming elections. However, the rally in Tbilisi reflects the unity among Georgians in their desire for a European future and resistance to measures that may align the country with Russia. The outcome of the parliamentary elections will be closely watched as Georgia navigates its path between the East and the West.
