The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has been a key player in ensuring easy access for fans attending playoff games for the Mets, Yankees, and Liberty at Citi Field, Yankee Stadium, and the Barclay’s Center. The MTA has seen record-breaking ridership in the last five weeks, with over 4.3 million customers on the subways on September 25. The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and Metro-North have also seen high ridership levels.
The MTA attributes the surge in ridership not only to the playoff games but also to the improved service across all modes of transportation. Subway on-time performance has exceeded 81% on weekdays and 84% on weekends. The commuter railroads are performing even better, with on-time performance consistently at 97% or higher.
The MTA has also launched the Student OMNY cards, which have seen a 26% increase in usage compared to last year, providing up to four free trips a day for students all year long.
As the subway system celebrates its 120th anniversary, the MTA acknowledges the challenges of maintaining an aging infrastructure. They remain committed to improving performance, upgrading infrastructure, and enhancing safety and affordability to ensure the subways thrive for another 120 years. MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber hopes these efforts will set the subways up for long-term success.
