Listeria outbreaks have been a major concern across the United States this year, resulting in hundreds of hospitalizations and multiple deaths. Various products such as deli meats, peanuts, mushrooms, and pet food have been linked to these outbreaks, with companies like Boar’s Head, BrucePac, BrightFarms, and Planters Peanuts issuing recalls. The largest outbreak has been tied to Boar’s Head Deli meat, resulting in 59 people hospitalized and 10 deaths across 19 states. Other companies have also seen significant recalls and outbreaks caused by listeria in 2024.
Symptoms of listeriosis, or listeria poisoning, include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, convulsions, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal symptoms. This infection can be especially dangerous for older adults, people with weak immune systems, and pregnant individuals. If individuals in these higher-risk categories experience flu-like symptoms within two months after consuming contaminated food, they should seek medical care and inform healthcare providers about their exposure.
The only deaths reported from listeria outbreaks this year have been associated with the Boar’s Head outbreak. Investigations are ongoing, and affected facilities are taking necessary measures to address and prevent further contamination. Consumers are advised to stay informed about food recalls and take precautions to avoid exposure to listeria.
