Italy’s Meloni condemns attacks on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon as ‘unacceptable’

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has called for the strengthening of the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon following recent attacks against UNIFIL by Israeli troops. During a visit to Beirut, Meloni stressed the importance of maintaining the mission’s impartiality to ensure the safety of peacekeepers and turn the page on conflict. She also plans to hold talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after her visit.

UNIFIL has come under fire in recent weeks, with five peacekeepers injured in separate incidents involving Israeli troops. Despite demands to move, the force has maintained its positions to monitor the conflict and deliver aid to civilians, as decided by contributing countries and the UN Security Council.

In response to the escalating violence, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati emphasized the need for a diplomatic solution to prevent further conflict in the region. Meanwhile, Hezbollah has announced a new phase in its fight against Israeli soldiers in southern Lebanon, deploying new weapons and tactics in the ongoing conflict.

The situation has led to more casualties and displacements in Lebanon, with over 2,000 people killed and more than 1 million displaced due to Israeli attacks. Hezbollah has expressed support for the Palestinian people after the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in Gaza, continuing to engage in solidarity with Palestinians against Israeli forces.

The escalating tensions in Lebanon highlight the need for international cooperation and diplomatic efforts to prevent further violence and protect civilian populations in the region.
