Mountain West Conference Commissioner Gloria Nevarez expressed her disappointment over volleyball teams forfeiting games to avoid playing against San Jose State. Four schools, including Boise State and Wyoming, canceled matches with the Spartans, with Nevada players also refusing to take the floor. Despite political support for the cancellations by Republican governors and former President Donald Trump, San Jose State has continued to play despite the negative attention.
Nevarez acknowledged that the cancellations could impact teams’ eligibility for the conference tournament in Las Vegas. While some teams, like New Mexico, chose to play despite concerns, San Jose State coach Todd Kress highlighted the toll the forfeitures have taken on his players. However, the Spartans have continued to compete, with upcoming matches scheduled against Air Force and Nevada.
Nevarez emphasized that the external pressures and political climate surrounding the issue of transgender athletes in women’s sports have made the situation challenging. Despite the controversy, San Jose State remains focused on playing and finding solace on the court. It remains to be seen how the situation will evolve as the Spartans face ongoing challenges and support their student-athletes in the face of adversity.
