President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have both shown optimism regarding the potential end of the Gaza war following the claimed killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar by Israeli forces. Although Hamas has not confirmed Sinwar’s death, Biden congratulated Israel on the operation and called it a step towards a political settlement in the conflict. Sinwar, who had been a critical figure for Hamas, had been a top target for Israel since a previous attack in October.
US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan also viewed Sinwar’s claimed death as an opportunity for progress towards ending the violence in Gaza. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that the mission in Gaza is not yet complete, indicating a potential continuation of the conflict. Harris also echoed Biden’s sentiments, stating that it is time for the “day after” to begin.
Despite the US administration’s hopeful outlook, Al Jazeera’s Marwan Bishara predicts that the killing of Sinwar may lead to further escalation and violence in the region. While Hamas has expressed support for a ceasefire and the release of captives, Netanyahu remains committed to achieving “total victory.”
Biden and Netanyahu have discussed the situation, with both leaders acknowledging the opportunity to advance the release of captives while continuing to work towards their respective objectives. The killing of Sinwar has brought both hope and concerns to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, with the future remaining uncertain.
