Navigating New York State’s 2024 Elections: A Comprehensive Guide

With less than three weeks until Election Day in New York, there are a number of important issues at stake for Empire State residents. New York Focus has outlined five key topics for voters to focus on, including the presidential and US Senate elections, House battleground seats, city ballot measures, an Equal Rights Amendment, and the potential loss of Democratic supermajorities in the state legislature.

While Democratic candidates have historically dominated in New York, with Vice President Kamala Harris leading in polls against Donald Trump, there are key House battleground races in the state that could affect control of Congress. Republicans are focusing on seven competitive seats, including three on Long Island and four throughout the rest of the state.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams, despite facing federal prosecution for bribery, is advocating for five charter amendments, including an Equal Rights Amendment to protect abortion access. There is also a proposed constitutional amendment that would enshrine abortion rights and other civil protections into New York’s constitution.

State Democrats are looking to maintain their majorities in the state senate and assembly, with Republicans potentially chipping away at their supermajorities. Campaign spending and key races indicate where priorities lie for both parties.

As Election Day approaches, New Yorkers will have the opportunity to weigh in on several crucial issues that could shape the future of their state.
