Man sentenced to 3 to 6 years in jail for starting Harlem fire that killed 2 puppies.

Harlem man, Wattie Folk, was sentenced to three to six years in state prison for intentionally setting ablaze an apartment, resulting in the death of two puppies. The incident occurred on June 24, 2022, and Folk pleaded guilty to arson and aggravated animal cruelty. As a result of his actions, Folk was also barred from owning an animal for ten years and listed on the New York City Animal Cruelty Registry.

The fire destroyed the apartment and all belongings of the tenant, trapping a 3-year-old pit bull and six puppies inside. Two of the puppies were killed, while the surviving pups required veterinary treatment for severe dehydration, coughing, and carbon monoxide exposure.

Folk was arrested about a year after the incident and admitted to setting the fire for revenge during an argument. His attorney cited his mental health struggles as playing a significant role in the incident, leading to the term handed down by State Supreme Court Justice Gregory Carro.

Manhattan District Attorney, Alvin Bragg, described Folk’s actions as “reckless” and emphasized the importance of accountability for those who endanger lives. Folk thanked the court for the sentence and the external mitigation presented regarding his medical issues, trauma history, and mental health. The Legal Aid Society represented Folk in this case.
