Water polo star Maddie Musselman’s husband, Pat Woepse, has tragically passed away at the age of 31 from a rare form of lung cancer. Woepse, a former water polo player at UCLA, was diagnosed with NUT carcinoma in September 2023, but was determined to see his wife compete in her third Olympics in Paris over the summer. Musselman, 26, announced the heartbreaking news on Instagram, describing Woepse as the light of her life and the best husband she could have asked for. She praised his courage and unwavering support throughout his battle with cancer.
The couple met in 2022, got married the following year, and faced the news of Woepse’s terminal diagnosis soon after. Despite the challenges, they shared a deep love and commitment to each other. Woepse, who helped the UCLA water polo team win national titles in 2014 and 2015, was known for his bravery and positive attitude in the face of adversity.
Musselman, who won Olympic gold with Team USA in 2020 and 2016, expressed gratitude for the support of her teammates during this difficult time. She highlighted Woepse’s selflessness and encouragement, even when she was torn between being with him and practicing with the team.
