New Jersey judge halts trial for alleged knife attacker of author Salman Rushdie, Hadi Matar

The trial of Hadi Matar, the man accused of severely injuring author Salman Rushdie in a 2022 knife attack, has been put on hold as judges consider a request to move it to another county. The attempted murder trial, which was scheduled for jury selection on Tuesday, has been halted until a ruling is made on the change of venue motion. Matar’s attorney requested the trial be moved out of Chautauqua County, where the attack occurred. District Attorney Jason Schmidt expressed disappointment at the delay, noting the additional challenges it presents. Matar is accused of rushing the stage and stabbing Rushdie more than a dozen times, leaving the author blind in one eye. Rushdie later wrote a book inspired by the attack called “Knife.” Matar has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and assault charges and has been held without bail since the incident. Federal authorities have also filed separate charges against Matar, alleging that he was motivated by a terrorist organization’s endorsement of a fatwa calling for Rushdie’s death. A trial for these federal charges is set to take place in U.S. District Court in Buffalo. Despite the hold on the trial, legal proceedings are expected to resume once a ruling is made on the change of venue request.
