Options available to be Derek Carr’s backup – NBC New York

The New Orleans Saints are facing a crucial point in their season as starting quarterback Derek Carr is set to miss multiple weeks due to an oblique injury. With Carr sidelined, the Saints will turn to either Jake Haener or Spencer Rattler as their backup quarterback for their upcoming home games against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Denver Broncos. Haener, a fourth-round pick from Fresno State, stepped in for Carr in their last game against the Kansas City Chiefs, completing 2 of 7 passes for 17 yards. However, it is Rattler, a fifth-round pick from South Carolina, who is rumored to be the favorite to start in place of Carr in the upcoming games.

Rattler’s college stats show his potential as a quarterback, having completed 68.9% of his passes for over 3,000 yards with 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions in his last season in college. On the other hand, Carr has started the 2024 season strong, completing over 70% of his passes for nearly a thousand yards with eight touchdowns and four interceptions in five games.

The Saints will be relying on their backup quarterback to step up and lead the team in Carr’s absence as they look to bounce back from a recent slump in their season. It remains to be seen how Haener or Rattler will perform in their upcoming games, but the team is hopeful that they can keep their momentum going despite the absence of their starting quarterback.
