Europeans rally in support of Palestine as anniversary of Gaza conflict approaches

The war in Gaza, which began on 7 October last year, has resulted in over 41,000 Palestinian deaths and has left the Strip in ruins. Almost 100 Israelis are still being held hostage by Hamas, with fewer than 70 thought to be alive. In support of Palestine, thousands of people gathered in major European cities ahead of the first anniversary of the conflict, with more rallies expected over the weekend and on Monday, the anniversary date.

In Rome, a peaceful protest turned violent as a group attempted to defy local authorities by moving towards the city center, leading to clashes with law enforcement. In London, scuffles broke out between pro-Palestinian activists and counterdemonstrators near Downing Street, resulting in 17 arrests. Madrid saw peaceful protests demanding a ceasefire in Gaza with no reported incidents.

Similar protests took place in Germany, Serbia, and other European countries, with calls for an immediate end to the conflict and disarmament. Security forces across Europe have warned of heightened alerts and increased security measures, fearing potential terrorist attacks or violent protests.

The conflict started when Hamas launched an attack into Israel on 7 October last year, resulting in casualties on both sides and extensive damage in Gaza. The ongoing violence has led to thousands of Palestinian deaths and Israeli hostages still in captivity. Pro-Palestinian protests continue to take place globally, often escalating into violent confrontations with law enforcement.
