Two teenagers, ages 12 and 13, were arrested for assaulting former New York Governor David Paterson and his stepson on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The incident occurred during an evening altercation on the sidewalk, with Paterson getting punched in the face multiple times and his stepson needing stitches. The assault was preceded by an encounter involving the stepson admonishing the teens for climbing a fire escape.
Paterson and his stepson were walking their dog when they encountered the same group of teens again, this time with some adults as back-up. A woman initiated the physical altercation, followed by another adult. Both Paterson and his stepson sustained bruises and cuts, requiring a hospital visit but were released the following morning.
Paterson expressed relief in the suspects turning themselves in and hoped they would learn from the encounter. The Governor appreciated the work of the NYPD in handling the situation. The assault charges against the two teenagers were announced one day after the incident, and investigators were still looking for three more individuals associated with the assault. The spokesperson for Paterson issued a statement acknowledging the incident and expressing gratitude for the swift actions taken by authorities.
