A 72-year-old homeless ex-convict, Joseph Jean-Louis, was arrested in connection with a bank robbery in Brooklyn after he was found with stolen cash at a Chinese restaurant on the Lower East Side. Jean-Louis, who had been released on parole in the summer, faces charges of robbery, grand larceny, and menacing. The robbery took place at a TD Bank in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, where Jean-Louis allegedly demanded money from a teller while claiming to have a gun. He left the bank with about $500, and a hidden tracker led police to the restaurant where he was apprehended. Despite claiming the money as his own, Jean-Louis was charged with criminal possession of stolen property. This incident marks Jean-Louis’s latest brush with the law, having been previously sentenced to prison in 1999 and again in 2020 for attempted robbery. His arraignment in Brooklyn Criminal Court was pending at the time of the report. The circumstances surrounding Jean-Louis’s release and subsequent involvement in the bank robbery raise questions about the effectiveness of rehabilitation and support systems for ex-convicts transitioning back into society.
