Former New York Gov. David Paterson and his stepson Anthony Chester Sliwa were attacked on a Manhattan sidewalk on Friday evening by a group of teenagers. The incident occurred near their home on the Upper East Side, when they told the teens to get down from a fire escape.

The teens followed them to a nearby McDonald’s and attacked them, resulting in minor bumps and bruises for both Paterson and his stepson. Sliwa suffered more severe cuts and bruises, including a possible concussion, but is expected to recover.

Paterson’s stepson is the son of Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels. Curtis Sliwa confirmed the attack and expressed gratitude that his son is recovering. Both Paterson and his stepson were taken to NY-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center for treatment.

A spokesperson for the former governor released a statement saying that the attack occurred near Paterson’s home and that the teens had a previous interaction with his stepson. Police are currently searching for the three teens who attacked Paterson and his stepson.

An earlier version of the story mistakenly identified Paterson’s stepson as his son. Paterson, 70, and his stepson were able to fight off their attackers and have filed a police report. They are currently at Cornell Hospital as a precaution. Further information on the incident is not yet available.
