Brewers stage late rally to defeat Mets 5-3 after Maton falters in 8th

Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Jackson Chourio led his team to a 5-3 comeback victory over the New York Mets in Game 2 of the National League Wild Card Series on Wednesday night. Chourio hit two solo home runs, including a lead-off shot in the first inning, to keep the Brewers’ season alive. The Mets had taken an early lead with three runs in the first two innings, but Milwaukee rallied back thanks to Chourio’s power at the plate.

Reliever Phil Maton struggled in the bottom of the eighth inning, giving up more runs that ultimately cost the Mets the game. This was the first time since 1982 that the Brewers had come back to win a game in which they were trailing in the seventh inning. The Mets left nine runners on base and went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position, failing to capitalize on their early lead.

Despite a strong start from Mets starter Sean Manaea, who had four strikeouts and only two earned runs, the Brewers were able to take advantage of some defensive errors and clutch hitting. The series now moves to a winner-take-all Game 3 on Thursday night at American Family Field. The Mets will need to regroup and find a way to convert their opportunities if they want to advance in the playoffs. For more updates on the Mets, visit AMNY.com.
