Fraternity leaders at Penn State sentenced for involvement in hazing death

Brendan Young and Daniel Casey, former fraternity leaders at Penn State’s Beta Theta Pi, were sentenced to two to four months in jail for their involvement in a hazing event that led to the death of 19-year-old Timothy Piazza in 2017. They pleaded guilty to hazing and reckless endangerment charges. Piazza died after consuming large amounts of alcohol during the fraternity’s initiation ritual.

The case highlighted the dangers of hazing and led to reforms in school policies and a national anti-hazing campaign supported by Piazza’s family. Piazza’s death also prompted Penn State to permanently ban the Beta Theta Pi fraternity and implement stricter punishments for hazing.

The grand jury report revealed that Piazza consumed 18 drinks in under two hours before falling down a flight of stairs and suffering multiple traumatic injuries. Fraternity members failed to seek medical help for him until the next morning. Piazza’s blood alcohol content at the time of the fall was four times the legal limit for driving.

The Piazza family played a crucial role in passing the Timothy J. Piazza Anti-Hazing Law in Pennsylvania, which imposes stricter penalties for hazing incidents. Today, Piazza is remembered through the Timothy J. Piazza Memorial Foundation and the Timothy J. Piazza Center for Fraternity and Sorority Research and Reform at Penn State.
