Antonio Prieto, a 46-year-old man from New York, has been indicted for the murder of his wife, 29-year-old Elibeth Salazar, with an axe last month in their Buffalo apartment. The incident of domestic violence occurred in the early hours of Aug. 26, with Salazar being found dead on the floor of a bedroom. Prieto was also found in the apartment with self-inflicted knife wounds and was taken to the hospital for treatment. He has since been charged with second-degree murder and remains held without bail. Prieto faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison if convicted. The case is set to continue with a pre-trial conference on Oct. 28. The Erie County District Attorney’s Office announced the indictment on Thursday, confirming Prieto’s charges. The tragic event has shocked the community and highlighted the need for awareness and prevention of domestic violence. In a news release, Acting Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane emphasized the intentional nature of Prieto’s actions in causing his wife’s death. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing and confronting issues of domestic violence to prevent further tragedies.
