UT student and his wife disappear in Mexico, prompting family to request assistance

Family and friends are seeking help to locate University of Texas doctorate student Frank Guzman and his wife, Caroline Katba, who have been missing since late July. The couple was traveling through Latin America to Chile for Frank’s research when they went “offline” on WhatsApp on July 22. Their families have been unable to reach them and have filed missing person reports in Mexico and Texas. A UT professor contacted Guzman’s dad when Frank did not show up for class, adding to their concern.

Guzman has been in touch with the U.S. Embassy and FBI, and a security team from UT believes the couple was last seen in Coatzacoalcos, Mexico. There is no record of them leaving the country as planned. Guzman described her brother as a dedicated student and believes he would not abandon his studies. She also mentioned that Katba is in the process of opening a business.

UT spokesperson Mike Rosen stated that the university would provide assistance in emergencies involving students abroad, deploying its international Critical Incident Response Team to collaborate with authorities and embassies. Guzman is asking for help in spreading the word about the missing couple and encourages anyone with information to contact the family.

The families are worried and hopeful for the safe return of Frank and Caroline, emphasizing that they had a purpose and would not disappear without reason. They are urging the public to assist in locating the missing couple.
