Travis James Mullis put to death in Texas for killing his 3-month-old son

Texas executed Travis James Mullis for the 2008 murder of his 3-month-old son, Alijah. Mullis, who was convicted of molesting, stomping on, and abandoning his infant son on Galveston’s Seawall, was executed by lethal injection and pronounced dead at 7:01 p.m. He claimed he reached a “breaking point” due to the baby’s crying. His last words included thanking loved ones and apologizing to the victim’s family. His defense attorney, Shawn Nolan, stated that Mullis had accepted responsibility for the crime and had worked on his redemption during his time on death row. Jack Roady, Galveston County criminal district attorney, stated that justice was finally served for Alijah after a lengthy legal process. Alijah’s grandmother, Carolyn Entriken, described him as an “extraordinarily beautiful” baby, and expressed regret that she did not get to see him grow up. Mullis had confessed to killing Alijah after a night of financial and relationship stress. He had a history of mental health issues and inappropriate behavior with young girls. Mullis was convicted of murder and sentenced to death in 2011. This case is among several recent executions in the U.S. with questions raised regarding the guilt of the inmates.
