Missouri executes Marcellus Williams for ex-reporter’s murder

On Tuesday, Missouri executed Marcellus Williams by lethal injection for the 1998 killing of a former newspaper reporter, despite objections from the prosecutor and the victim’s family. Williams maintained his innocence and a lack of DNA evidence connecting him to the crime scene was raised. Despite efforts to stop the execution, both the Missouri Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court declined to intervene. Williams’ final meal included chicken wings and tater tots, and his last words were, “All praise be to Allah in every situation.” Williams was convicted in 2001 of first-degree murder, burglary, and robbery in the death of Lisha Gayle, who was stabbed 43 times. Williams’ previous scheduled executions were halted for further DNA testing and investigation. Williams argued for his innocence, presenting evidence of mishandled evidence in his trial, but the courts upheld his conviction. Missouri has executed two other inmates this year and has nine people currently on death row. Another execution is scheduled in December, and more executions are anticipated in Alabama and Oklahoma. Governor Mike Parson stood by the judicial process, stating that no findings of innocence had been made in Williams’ case.
