How will dry weather affect the colors? – NBC New York

As fall approaches in New York, many are looking forward to the beautiful colors of the changing leaves. However, the recent dry spell has raised concerns about how it will affect this year’s fall foliage.

According to experts, areas of upper New England will see peak fall foliage in late September, while upstate New York can expect it in early October. States like Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island should see peak foliage in mid-October. Meanwhile, New York City, Long Island, and New Jersey are likely to experience peak fall foliage in late October in 2024.

The dry weather in recent weeks has been counteracted by above-average rain totals the previous month, which has helped maintain soil moisture levels. This is crucial for vibrant fall colors, as soil moisture, along with mild, sunny days and cool nights, influences the intensity of the autumn leaves. However, continued dry weather could potentially stress the trees and impact the fall foliage.

It may take a few more weeks to see the full extent of the dry weather’s impact on the fall colors, especially in areas like upstate New York where peak foliage is expected in late September or early October. In the New York City area, the effects of the dry weather may not be fully known until mid to late October.
