The city of New York is gearing up for the 2nd annual Great Broadway Sweep, a citywide effort to clean up litter in each borough during Climate Week NYC. Led by the Sanitation Foundation, the official nonprofit of the NYC Department of Sanitation, the program aims to promote cleanliness, environmental responsibility, and waste reduction. Various celebrities, including Coco Jones and Andy Cohen, will join the effort to clean up city streets starting on September 21 in Brooklyn.
The city is plagued with litter, producing approximately 12,000 tons of waste daily, according to environmental research. Street litter can have harmful effects on animals, especially aquatic wildlife, by polluting local waterways. The Great Broadway Sweep is an opportunity for volunteers to pick up litter in each borough with tools and equipment provided, along with special guests, live music, activities, and environmental fun.
The cleanup events will take place in various locations throughout the city, starting in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and ending in West Brighton, Staten Island. The Union Square cleanup will focus on food waste, highlighting the city’s mandatory composting program. Last year’s Great Broadway Sweep was a success, with over 500 volunteers collecting more than 2,500 pounds of litter across nine locations.
The Great Broadway Sweep is just one of the many events happening during Climate Week NYC, with the goal of raising awareness and taking action towards environmental sustainability.
