Former National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster, who served under Donald Trump, has stated that he would not join Trump’s administration if he is reelected in the upcoming fall. McMaster describes his time in the Trump White House as a “tour of duty” and calls Trump “very offensive” and “brash.” He does not see himself working in a Kamala Harris administration either. In his new book, McMaster claims that Trump pitted members of his administration against each other, and that everything was magnified under Trump’s leadership. He hopes that Trump learns from his first four years in office, particularly regarding his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin. McMaster suggests that Trump may have sought acceptance from strongmen like Putin to project strength.
McMaster succeeded Michael Flynn as national security adviser in 2017, and had a good working relationship with Trump until he was replaced by John Bolton in 2018. McMaster says he is willing to work in any administration where he feels he can make a difference, but he is “used up” with Trump. Despite his criticisms of Trump, McMaster acknowledges that disrupting the status quo was part of his job in working with the former president.
