Colorado funeral home instructed to pay $950 million in lawsuit involving decomposing bodies

A Colorado judge ordered funeral home owners Jon and Carie Hallford to pay nearly $1 billion to families in a civil lawsuit involving at least 190 bodies that were not cremated or buried as promised. The judge ruled in favor of 125 people who sued the couple in a class action lawsuit, with the judgment including punitive damages due to the egregious nature of the act. The Hallfords face hundreds of felonies in Colorado, including abusing corpses and money crimes related to COVID relief funds.

The case came to light after neighbors reported a putrid smell emanating from the funeral home, leading to investigations and charges against the couple. Families expressed horror at receiving what they believed were cremated remains of their loved ones. The payout is intended to hold the Hallfords accountable, as it is unlikely they will comply with the judgment.

The mishandling of bodies and mix-up of remains in this case prompted tougher regulations in Colorado related to the funeral home industry. The state now requires funeral directors, embalmers, and cremationists to be licensed, and has expanded inspection capabilities for funeral homes and crematories. Lawmakers have sought to tighten control over the industry following incidents like this one, aiming to prevent future tragedies and ensure accountability within the profession.
