A former lawyer for President Donald Trump, Jenna Ellis, has agreed to help prosecutors in the criminal case against individuals who falsified documents claiming Trump won Arizona in 2020. Ellis agreed to testify truthfully in exchange for the charges against her being dropped. She was one of 18 people charged with nine felonies in April and is the only defendant so far to cooperate with prosecutors. Ellis, along with Rudy Giuliani, informed Arizona legislative leaders they had power over electors after the 2020 election. Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes believes Ellis can provide valuable information to advance the case. Ellis previously took a plea deal in a similar case in Georgia and agreed to testify against other defendants there. The case in Arizona involves 11 Republicans who submitted false documents to Congress claiming Trump won the state, as well as seven aides to the former president, all facing nine felony counts. Mayes stated that due to the complexity of the case and the large number of defendants, a trial in Arizona is unlikely to take place before 2025. The case is part of a larger effort by Republicans in several states to falsely claim that Trump won the 2020 election, in an attempt to influence Congress and Vice President Mike Pence to overturn the results. Ultimately, Pence and Congress certified Joe Biden’s win, despite the efforts of those involved in the falsification scheme.
