Pope Francis decides not to attend Good Friday procession in order to prioritize his health

Pope Francis cancelled his attendance at the Good Friday procession at Rome’s Colosseum due to concerns about his health. The 87-year-old pope, who struggles with a knee ailment, bronchitis, and influenza, decided to “preserve his health” ahead of Easter week engagements. The cancellation is likely to renew concerns about his declining strength, as he uses a cane or wheelchair to move around. The Easter period is the most important date in the Church’s liturgical calendar, marking the resurrection of Jesus.

The Via Crucis procession at the Colosseum is a re-enactment of Jesus’ crucifixion, with participants holding the cross as they pray and meditate. This year, the service included participants such as nuns, priests, charity workers, migrants, and disabled individuals. Pope Francis wrote the meditations for the event, focusing on meekness, forgiveness, and prayers for persecuted Christians and war victims. He also highlighted the role of women in Jesus’ journey and prayed for those who suffer injustice and exploitation.

Earlier in the day, Francis participated in the Passion of the Lord service at St Peter’s Basilica, where he prayed silently in front of the main altar due to his frail state. The pope’s focus on women was also evident as he performed the foot-washing ritual at a women’s prison in Rome. Despite his health concerns, Francis continues to engage in Easter week activities and deliver his message of peace and compassion to the world.
