Smokehouse Creek Fire Named Texas’s Largest Wildfire Ever Recorded

A grass fire known as the Smokehouse Creek Fire reignited on March 3, 2024, in Sanford, Texas, endangering the town and leading to evacuations. The fire had initially been battled by firefighters in Miami, Texas, on March 2, after high winds caused a flare-up. The Texas A&M Forest Service deployed a plane to drop fire retardant on the fire. The aftermath of the fire was seen in Canadian, Texas, where damage was evident, and a house in Stinnett, Texas, was destroyed. Additionally, areas between Miami and Canadian were destroyed as the fire spread eastward towards Oklahoma. The fire, which burned through more than a million acres in late February and early March, was a challenge for Texas firefighters and caused significant destruction. Despite efforts to contain it, the fire continued to spread throughout the state. Signs of recovery were reported in areas affected by the fire, but the damage caused by the Smokehouse Creek Fire was extensive, with burned out barbed wire fences and destroyed properties visible in its wake. The fire also spread to Hutchinson County, Texas, creating further challenges for firefighting efforts. The community and firefighters continued to work together to combat the blaze and mitigate its impact on homes and landscapes.
