Texas is home to some of the fastest growing counties in the U.S., with six of the top 10 fastest-growing counties located in the state. This growth is attributed to factors such as U.S. residents moving into Texas, international migration, birth rates, and death rates. Population growth data was measured between July 1, 2022 and July 1, 2023.
Southern states, including those in the South Census region, experienced faster growth in 2023 compared to the previous year. The South region, made up of 16 states and Washington, DC, saw approximately 67% of counties experiencing population gains in 2023. This growth was driven by domestic and international migration, with the South growing by more than 1.4 million people between 2022 and 2023.
Texas specifically saw significant population increases in counties such as Harris County, Collin County, and Montgomery County. These counties had the largest population increases in the nation in 2023. Additionally, more people moved to the South than any other region in the U.S., with the region accounting for 87% of the nation’s growth in 2023.
Overall, the South region has experienced increasing year-to-year net domestic migration since 2018 and is now the most populous region in the U.S. with 130.1 million people. This growth trend is expected to continue as more people are drawn to the South for various reasons.
