Israel launched air strikes near Lebanon’s eastern city of Baalbek, killing one person, in the second raid in the region since the Gaza war. The strikes, which targeted a former Hezbollah building and a warehouse, also injured six others. The governor of the Baalbek-Hermel region confirmed the casualties. The state-run National News Agency reported Israeli air strikes on two locations, including a residential building in the town of Ansar. Israel’s Defence Minister stated that any ceasefire in Gaza would not change Israel’s goal of pushing Hezbollah out of southern Lebanon. Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in October, at least 316 people, mostly Hezbollah fighters, and 53 civilians have been killed in Lebanon, while in Israel, 10 soldiers and seven civilians have died. This marks another escalation in the cross-border hostilities that have been ongoing since the Gaza war, with fears of a full-blown conflict increasing in recent weeks. The city of Baalbek is a Hezbollah stronghold bordering Syria, and Israeli strikes have also targeted Hezbollah positions in the area previously. Hezbollah has vowed to continue its attacks on Israel until a ceasefire is reached in Gaza.
