U.S. military personnel are constructing a temporary floating dock off Gaza to distribute food and aid to Palestinians by sea, due to Israel’s restrictions on land deliveries. President Biden announced the mission during his State of the Union, involving over 1,000 soldiers and other allies. Israel has blocked aid routes, leading to severe food shortages, malnutrition, and recent deaths in Gaza. Airdrops of aid are ongoing, with the U.S. dropping over 124,000 meals to date. Five children died in a drop from an unknown country, not the U.S., while American planes delivered more aid to the region. European countries are restoring funding to aid agencies for Palestinians, and the EU is opening a shipping corridor from Cyprus to Gaza for humanitarian aid. American and coalition forces downed 28 Houthi drones in the Red Sea attack, while Cyprus is set to become a key hub for delivering aid to Gaza. The mission aims to address the urgent need for food assistance in the region, with World Central Kitchen delivering millions of meals to date. Israel has welcomed the aid but will conduct security checks on deliveries.
