A new National Holocaust Museum is set to open in Amsterdam, shedding light on the persecution of Dutch Jews during World War II. The museum, located in the city’s former Jewish quarter, tells the story of the Holocaust through various exhibits, including video images, photos, scale models, and personal mementoes of Dutch victims who were deported and murdered in Nazi death camps.
One survivor, Flip Delmonte, who was rescued as a baby from the Jewish quarter during the Nazi occupation, shared his story and emphasized the importance of remembering the Jewish people who lost their lives during this dark period in history. The museum’s head curator, Annemiek Gringold, highlighted the significance of preserving and passing down the stories of Holocaust survivors, especially as the generation that experienced these atrocities firsthand is slowly leaving us.
The museum also features a room filled with hundreds of discriminatory laws enacted by the German occupiers in the Netherlands, showcasing how the Nazis, with the help of Dutch civil servants, dehumanized the Jewish population before sending them to their deaths. Visitors can also see poignant artifacts, such as a collection of buttons found at Sobibor, serving as a tangible reminder of the lives lost during the Holocaust.
The National Holocaust Museum aims to educate the public about the horrors of the Holocaust and the dangers of anti-Semitism, ensuring that future generations remember the atrocities committed during World War II. The museum is set to officially open on March 10, with various exhibits and personal stories to help visitors understand the impact of this tragic chapter in history.
