A large coastal storm threatened the Northeast, including major cities like New York City and Boston, with heavy rain and potential flooding. More than 30 million people were under a flood watch from Wednesday afternoon, with up to three inches of rain expected in some areas. New York City’s emergency officials advised commuters to expect travel disruptions and possible flooded roads during the evening commute, urging caution and planning ahead.
Governor Philip D. Murphy of New Jersey also warned residents about the potential for flooding and advised against driving through flooded areas. The flood watch was less severe than a warning or advisory but indicated favorable conditions for flooding. Meteorologists warned that even after the watch expired on Thursday, an additional one to two inches of rain could continue to fall over the weekend in the region.
Mayor Eric Adams of New York City urged residents to plan ahead and stay safe as the storm approached. The National Weather Service offices for New York City and Boston both issued warnings about the potential for widespread minor flooding in urban areas, poor drainage zones, and low-lying areas. Overall, the storm was expected to bring significant rainfall and the potential for travel disruptions throughout the Northeastern coastal region.
