A 12-year-old girl attending a sleepover at her friend’s house in Oregon texted her parents in the middle of the night begging to be picked up after her friend’s father allegedly spiked their smoothies with sedatives. Michael Meyden, 57, was indicted on multiple charges related to drugging his daughter’s friends with benzodiazepines during the sleepover last August. The girls described Meyden as very involved in their activities and constantly checking on them while they slept.
One of the girls who did not drink the smoothie pretended to sleep while Meyden hovered over her and her friend, moving her friend’s arm and positioning her in a way that made her feel unsafe. Frantically, she texted her parents asking to be picked up in the middle of the night. Eventually, the parents of another friend came to get her, and all three girls were taken to a hospital where they tested positive for benzodiazepines.
Meyden, who was divorced at the end of last year, is currently out on bail and living in a trailer park in Vancouver, Washington. The horrifying incident has shocked the Lake Oswego community, a suburb just a few miles south of Portland. The girls’ families alerted authorities and took them to the hospital the next day after realizing what had happened. The case raises concerns about the safety of children during sleepovers and highlights the importance of being vigilant and aware of potential dangers in such situations.
