New image of the Gilgo killings suspect, Rex Heuermann, surfaces

A Long Island man unknowingly posted a picture of serial killing suspect Rex Heuermann on Instagram in 2015, years before he was charged with multiple murders. The image showed Heuermann drinking a beer on a train, captioned with a joke about staying at CVS and eating fried food. The man later realized the connection when Heuermann’s arrest made headlines last July. Some criticized the original poster for fat-shaming and posting the picture without the man’s knowledge, but others applauded his unknowing foresight in identifying Heuermann as a potential criminal. Heuermann has been charged with the murders of four sex workers, known as the Gilgo Four, with DNA evidence connecting him to the crimes. He pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to appear in court next month. The Gilgo Four case involves the discovery of eleven bodies along Ocean Parkway on Long Island between 2010 and 2011. Heuermann was also linked to the 2007 slaying of Maureen Brainard-Barnes through DNA found on a discarded beverage container. He faces several murder charges and will go to court in April. The chilling connection between the Instagram post and Heuermann’s crimes has shocked many, highlighting the unpredictable ways in which past actions can be revisited in light of new information.
