Facebook and Instagram Are Back Online After an Hour-Long Outage in India and Other Countries

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Messenger, and WhatsApp, experienced a global outage that lasted for over an hour on Tuesday evening, affecting thousands of users in India and other countries. Users were unable to load apps, send messages, or refresh their feeds on Facebook and Instagram. The outage was confirmed by Meta spokesperson Andy Stone, who assured users that they were working on resolving the issue.

The outage was reported on Downdetector, with over 300,000 reports on Facebook and over 20,000 reports on Instagram. Users were also unable to log back into their accounts once they were logged out due to the outage. WhatsApp did not experience any outages during this time.

As users flocked to Elon Musk-owned X to find out more about the outage, both X and Meta began trending on social media platforms. Musk even took a jab at Meta, joking that if users were able to read his post, it was because X’s servers were working.

This global outage is not the first for Meta, as similar issues were reported last year in July and June. The services were eventually restored, but the company faced backlash from users who were left unable to access their accounts. The outage serves as a reminder of the dependence that many users have on social media platforms for communication and information-sharing.
