Albania establishes the inaugural NATO base in the Western Balkans

Albania, a member of NATO, inaugurated a refurbished Soviet-era airbase in Kucova, marking the alliance’s first presence in the Western Balkan region. The new base, funded by NATO with 50 million euros, will serve as a modern hub for training and hosting a variety of fighter jets.

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama stressed the importance of the base in enhancing security in the region amidst potential threats from Russia. The reactivation of the air base, officially closed in 2005, is seen as a strategic move by Albania to strengthen its ties with NATO and showcase its commitment to security.

During the inauguration ceremony, US F-16 and F-35 fighter jets flew over the base, highlighting the alliance’s support for Albania’s security efforts. NATO’s acting spokesperson, Dylan White, emphasized the significance of the base upgrade in bolstering NATO’s presence in the Western Balkans.

In addition to the airbase, Rama revealed that Tirana was also discussing the possibility of establishing a naval base in western Albania with NATO. Albania, a NATO member since 2009, is also a candidate for EU membership, further underscoring its commitment to regional security and stability.

The inauguration of the Kucova air base showcases Albania’s efforts to strengthen its defense capabilities and deepen its partnerships with NATO, reinforcing its position as a key player in the Western Balkan region.
