Former Attorney General Feleti Teo has been named the new Prime Minister of Tuvalu following a general election that saw the country’s ties with Taiwan come under scrutiny. Teo was unanimously nominated by his 15 lawmaker colleagues and will be officially sworn in later this week.
The previous Prime Minister, Kausea Natano, who was pro-Taiwan, lost his seat in the January election. His stance on maintaining diplomatic ties with Taiwan, as well as a defense and migration agreement with Australia, raised concerns among some lawmakers. The agreement with Australia was seen as a countermeasure against China’s growing influence in the region.
Teo’s views on Taiwan and the Australian security pact have not been publicly disclosed, but his extensive experience in the fisheries industry and as the country’s first attorney general will likely shape his approach to these issues. Teo’s nomination was delayed by inclement weather, which prevented several lawmakers from traveling to the capital.
While it remains uncertain whether Teo will maintain ties with Taiwan, international relations will be a key focus for his government. The decision on diplomatic ties, as well as the appointment of high commissioners and ambassadors, will be crucial issues for the new administration. Additionally, addressing climate change and improving the country’s telecommunications infrastructure will also be top priorities.
Congratulations poured in for Teo following his nomination, with lawmaker Simon Kofe noting that it was the first time in Tuvalu’s history that a Prime Minister had been nominated unopposed. The new government will face significant challenges in navigating diplomatic relations and addressing pressing issues like climate change, but Teo’s leadership and experience will be vital in guiding Tuvalu through these complexities.
