Martha’s Rule: A Necessary Addition to the NHS – Society Podcast

Martha Mills, a 13-year-old from Wales, tragically died after a series of shocking mistakes made in her treatment at King’s College hospital in London. Although reassured by medics that Martha would make a full recovery, she died just after a bank holiday weekend from septic shock, likely due to a failure to move her to intensive care sooner. Now, after a campaign by Martha’s parents, the NHS is implementing “Martha’s rule” at over 100 hospital sites in England from April. This rule will give patients and their families access to an urgent review from senior medics in the same hospital if a patient’s condition is deteriorating rapidly and their concerns are not being listened to. The family hopes that Martha’s legacy will prevent other families from suffering similar tragedies in the future.
