Billy Mitchell, a well-known arcade gamer, has recently reached a settlement in a dispute over disputed world records set in the 1980s. Mitchell was the subject of the 2007 documentary “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters,” which portrayed him as a manipulative individual. His high scores were invalidated in 2018 by Twin Galaxies, which tracks and records video game achievements, after an investigation found that Mitchell had used a modified machine to set his records. Although he filed a defamation suit, the suit was finally settled last week, and his scores have been “reinstated” and posted on a “historical database,” but will not be added back to the main leaderboard. David Tashroudian, a lawyer for Twin Galaxies, explained that settling the matter was a way for both parties to avoid high costs and uncertainty at trial. Despite Mitchell’s restored scores, the current record belongs to Robbie Lakeman.
