The most recent U.S. Census figures show that North Carolina’s population grew by 139,526 residents in 2023, making it the fourth-highest population growth rate in the nation. The data also revealed that the majority of the growth in the state came from domestic migration, with nearly 100,000 residents moving from other states. Additionally, there were 12,657 more natural births than deaths, and 29,448 new residents came from abroad. These numbers reflect a trend of increasing international migration following the pandemic.
According to the Census Bureau, the nation’s population increased by more than 1.6 million people in 2023, with the South accounting for 87% of the growth. In total, 42 states and the District of Columbia saw increasing populations, compared to 31 states and D.C. in 2022. On the other hand, New York lost the most residents, with a decline of 101,984, followed by California, Illinois, Puerto Rico, and Louisiana.
The growth in North Carolina and other states is seen as a result of economic policies and opportunities created by the states. The data also reflects a return to pre-pandemic levels of U.S. migration and a decrease in deaths, which were offset by an increase in immigration. This resulted in the nation experiencing its largest population gain since 2018.
In North Carolina, the population now stands at 10.8 million residents, representing a 1.3% increase. The state’s percentage change trails South Carolina, Texas, and Florida, and is equal to Idaho.
